ECF - Assessment - Make accurate and productive use of Assessment (Secondary NQT+1s)

Who is this programme for?
For teachers who have completed their NQT year, and would like to further develop their skills of Standard 6 of the emerging Early Career Framework (ECF) – Assessment, and move their teaching practice towards outstanding.

Outcomes
Delegates will increase their knowledge and understanding of the details of The Early Career Framework Standard 6 – Assessment, and further develop their awareness of how effective assessment is critical to teaching in that it provides teachers with information about pupils’ understanding and needs.  They will develop their ability to avoid common assessment pitfalls, check prior knowledge and understanding during lessons, provide high-quality feedback and make marking more manageable and effective

The following will be explored during the session:
  • how good assessment helps teachers avoid being over-influenced by potentially misleading factors
  • how before using assessment, teachers should be clear about the reasons for it
  • how to be of value, assessment must inform decisions that teachers make and to be effective, must allow pupils to act on feedback
  • how high quality feedback can be both written and verbal
  • how, over time, feedback should support students to monitor and regulate their own learning
  • how, approaches to assessment need to be efficient to avoid them becoming onerous resulting in a disproportionate impact on workload

Who is the Trainer?
The course is delivered by Jon Rhodes, Assistant Headteacher: Student Progress and Achievement, Mayflower High School (Billericay). Jon has previously worked as a Class teacher, Head of Department, Head of Faculty and Teaching and Learning Lead in secondary schools both in the United Kingdom and abroad. He has a Joint Honours degree in Economics and History. Jon has facilitated the Outstanding Teacher Programme and has led workshops for Initial Teacher Training for Mid-Essex ITT and at Newly Qualified Teacher training for Billericay Teaching School Alliance.

How will my School benefit?
Delegates will have the opportunity to explore both the purpose and pitfalls associated with the assessment of pupils’ learning. Through discussion they will explore the role of assessment and its place in helping a student achieve their full academic potential.  In addition delegates will be offered practical strategies that will ensure that assessment is both effective and manageable. Delegates should leave with improved confidence in being able to effectively assess the pupils in their classes whilst at the same time be better at managing their assessment workload.

How will my students benefit?
Students will in turn benefit from more efficient assessment strategies that will enable them to make accelerated progress in their levels of attainment. Equally, they will benefit from more productive feedback that will allow them to become more independent and self-directing learners.
