Linear A Levels - what have we learnt and how can we improve? (Secondary)
Target Audience
For teachers of all linear A level courses across all phases of introduction. The course should appeal to both experienced A level teachers and those new to teaching at this level who are all facing similar challenges with this new style of qualification. While the focus will be on A level teaching, issues discussed will be of relevance to those delivering other KS5 courses.

Outcomes

Delegates will increase their knowledge and understanding of the demands of linear A levels and importantly examine strategies designed to meet these unique challenges currently being used by experienced teachers. With an emphasis on shared discussion and practical classroom application, this course is an opportunity to pose questions, trial ideas and reach conclusions that will make a positive impact on student progress.

The following will be explored during the course:
  • What are the unique challenges and context of linear A levels?
  • How can we help students retain increased amounts of content?
  • What techniques can we use to help them recall knowledge and understanding?
  • How can Flipped learning help students to become independent learners?
  • Embedding these techniques – formative assessment and Medium Term Planning
Who are the Trainers?
The course is delivered by Stuart Newton, AHT and Director of Sixth Form and colleagues, who are actively researching the effectiveness of these tools at Anglo European School.  The Sixth Form was rated Outstanding under the new Ofsted criteria in March 2017 and has offered linear courses at KS5, in the form of the IB Diploma for over forty years.  All presenters are experienced teachers of both qualifications and the course has been designed with an emphasis on practical solutions, which have been gleaned from colleagues across the school.

How will my School benefit?

Delegates will have the opportunity to explore a variety of aspects of linear A Level teaching, hear from experienced colleagues about their experiences of teaching them and importantly share ideas on solutions to the key challenges of successfully delivering these qualifications. Delegates should leave with improved confidence, practical solutions and a framework for planning the effective teaching of linear A Levels in the future.

How will my students benefit?
Students will in turn benefit from the focus of the course as they will be given techniques to improve their ability to retain and recall increased content, whilst developing their skills to cope with new forms of assessment. They should also benefit from a consistent approach to meeting these challenges across subject areas.
